Our Purpose

The Sunflower chapter of Audubon started in October of 2023 to support those in the north west and north central area of Kansas interested in birding and nature. The main purpose is environmental education. Programs are held in Hays, Kansas, the central point of the chapter. Anyone may attend a planned program, membership in the chapter, the State Audubon Chapter or even National Audubon is not required.

The Sunflower chapter is supported by both the state and the national Audubon. Speakers and presenters have been university professors, Sterberg museum staff, graduate students of Fort Hays, etc. Topics can be any that support the chapter's mission of education in not just birding but all of the natural world. To increase awareness of our environment and to, hopefully, foster attendees to contribute to caring for their surroundings, even as close to them as their backyards.

Future activities will, hopefully, include establishing a bird feeding station an elementary school. The chapter has already provided Adventurepacks to the Hays Public Library. These backpacks contain, among other things, one pair of adult and 2 pairs of children's binoculars. They can be checked out, just like a library book.

Membership

Membership dues in the chapter are used to support the education efforts but are not required to attend planned events. Possible expenditures are supplies for crafts for events or transportation to a nearby wildlife watching area.  While membership in National Audubon would automatically qualify as a membership in the Sunflower chapter, additional funds collected through Sunflower membership would make possible more local activities.

If you'd like to apply for membership, please click to download and fill out the form below to send to with dues to Sunflower, A Chapter of Audubon Society, PO Box 362, Hays, KS 67601. You can also send dues or donate to the chapter through the paypal link found at the bottom of the page.

                                              Our Mission

Audubon protects birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow.

Across aisles. Across landscapes. Across borders. When it comes to our environment, birds are a uniting force. Birds cross borders, from neighborhoods to states and beyond, migrating tens of thousands of miles across multiple countries from one tip of the planet to the other. And so do we. Audubon's hemispheric approach recognizes that the majority of bird species in the Americas migrate annually between Canada, the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Audubon’s programs are like the birds—unencumbered by political boundaries and seamlessly integrated across the Western Hemisphere.

We work to bend the bird curve. For 120 years and counting, the National Audubon Society has preserved bird habitats, conducted scientific research, influenced policymakers to enact commonsense conservation laws, and engaged communities across the hemisphere to protect the natural resources upon which birds—and we—depend. By "bending the bird curve," we are working to halt, and ultimately reverse, the decline of birds across the Americas.
